Ghada Amer from Egypt
“My work is all about women, women's bodies, women's rights. I decided to use embroidery and needles to speak about this throughout my career. I like the Dior charms. I even have my name on the charms.”
Alex Gardner from California
"When I think of handbags, one of the first things that comes to mind is the ‘Lady Dior’ bag.
We used a painting I made.
I reinterpreted it using a blend of materials."
Bouthayna Al Muftah from Qatar
"The inspiration behind this Lady Dior handbag is a conceptual book of sorts sheathed in stitched chiffon swatches covered in Arabic typography, using words from local folk songs and poetry."
Brian Calvin from California
“I like that the fundamental iconic shape [of the Lady Dior bag] remains, allowing experimentation within fixed parameters. I know it’s a cliché, but as a painter, I can’t help but liken it to a blank, stretched canvas awaiting inspiration.”
Dorothy Iannone from America, Berlin-based
“The large Lady Dior comes in denim-effect fabric, embellished with sequin embroidery and stars from the Statue of Liberty crown. The little sister is crafted from glossy black crinkled calfskin and features three Libertys embroidered with bright beads.”
Françoise Pétrovitch from France
“The focus is on the bird, a recurring leitmotif."
Minjung Kim from South Korea, based in France, Italy and USA
“On one design, blocks of coloured mink recreate ‘Story,’ inspired by the artist’s library in Milan. A white bag adorned with silk organza pleats recalls ‘The Street,’ depicting a sea of paper umbrellas as seen from above. ‘Red Mountains,’ meanwhile, is based on an ink and watercolor Hanji paper work, with waves flipped upside down to evoke a mountain range."
Sara Cwynar from Canada, Brooklyn-based
“The ‘Lady Dior’ bag is kind of a symbol or an icon and I wanted to remake it out of images
that are also symbols or icons. The large bag is red and it has a kind of classic quilted texture and feels more like a kind of
patchwork.
I sourced images from museum archives, history books…
I have these stock photos of birds that Dior has turned into patches.
This is a stock photo of lips.
And this is also three-dimensionally printed."
Shara Hughes from New York
“This Lady Dior feels like it can live in many different generations and can be paired with any style. I like the fact that it can formally be stretched to several interesting artistic levels that are realized with this collaboration with Dior and artists.”
Wang Yuyang from China
“We used a range of tradtitional techniques, such as embroidery and inlay. The black bag with the image from the "Artificial Moon" series is embroidered with an array of small embellishments such as pearls and tiny sequins."
Zhenya Machneva from Russia
“For me, it was a challenge to make something beautiful for ladies, for women.
I had a lot of questions, like what it means to be a girl or a woman.
I was thinking about the bag as a sculpture or an art object. I tried to use architectural forms, geometric, triangles and cylinders.
My inspiration for the bags, you can see this metal construction.
When you open it, there is a tapestry that I really like."
